The approach of February half term often comes with some trepidation – and no wonder, when we’re faced with an entire week of entertaining the kids when the weather can still be wintery. However, there are plenty of ways to liven up the week, and many of them right here at Princesshay. Read on for inspiration for a week of excitement and relaxation for you and the whole family.

1. Beat the half term blues

Did you know how many stores we have that are perfect for kids of all ages? For younger children, what better way to spend a morning than picking out a brand new personalised teddy bear from Build-A-Bear Workshop? With hundreds of different bears to choose from – including Disney characters like Stitch, and favourites from Pokemon to PAW Patrol – they’ll have hours of fun selecting their clothing, accessories, sounds and scents.

Meanwhile, for tween girls, the bright lights, pinks and sparkles of Claire’s is like Christmas come early. Why not plan a fun makeover day, with glitzy stick-on nails, fluffy headbands and flavoured lip gloss? They may even let you help them pick out a Valentine’s Day present for their crush!

Older teenage boys and girls alike will find plenty at HMV to keep them busy for the whole of half term. Whether it’s picking out a new movie or video game (have they played Hogwarts Legacy yet?), choosing a new board game, or indulging in their favourite pop culture, from Funko Pops to graphic novels – they’ll be set for the week.

And for kids (and adults) of all ages, take a trip to MenKind for pure entertainment value. There are loads of build-your-own projects young engineers can get their teeth into – from the next-level marble run Space Coaster to a Hydraulic Robot Arm. Or if we get some unexpected sun, check out their range of outdoor games and remote-controlled cars.

2. A meal to remember

If February half term isn’t a time for treating the whole family to a meal out, when is? And there are so many family-friendly dining spots in Princesshay to suit even the fussiest of eaters, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

First up, is, of course, Nando’s. With their special Nandino’s set menu for kids under 10, little lunchers can choose a main, two delicious sides and a drink or dessert all for £5.95. And with options like corn on the cob, spicy rice and long stem broccoli – it’s a healthy choice. For the more adventurous eaters, why not take them out for a tasty bowl of ramen at wagamama? The kids menu features mini versions of what the adults are eating – from a mini chicken katsu to a mini yasai ramen – all laden with crunchy corn, carrots and greens.

Or for a treat, you can’t go wrong with a generous serving of crispy buttermilk fried tenders from Slim Chickens, or share a huge deep base Detroit style pizza from our newest dining spot POP Kitchen. Choose from a simple Margherita to an 18-hour pulled beef rib to a (potentially) controversial pineapple and ham. 3. Have a flippin’ good time!

It’s Shrove Tuesday on the 13th February – you know what that means? Time to plan a pancake party! Head on over to Next to pick up the perfect pan – a non-stick pan with low or no sides is ideal. Then, get the rest of your equipment at Flying Tiger. A balloon whisk will ensure your crepes are the lightest and fluffiest, while a glass lemon squeezer will take your creations to the next level.

Once you’ve got your basic ingredients, start thinking about toppings – let your imaginations go wild. Fancy a marshmallow and chocolate crepe? Lemon and honey drop scones? American pancakes with cheddar cheese, bacon and maple syrup? Did you know, Chandos Deli not only serves up the best sandwiches in town – they also stock honey that comes from the apiary on the Princesshay rooftops.

4. Explore the new season

When the kids are occupied, take some time to catch up on your fashion must-haves as you explore the new Spring/Summer collections in store now. This season, super feminine skirts are in – think flowing and elegant and frilly – but paired with oversize masculine shirts, bulky sweaters or a blazer. Reiss’s timeless tailoring combined with AllSaints’ rebellious designs captures that juxtaposition perfectly, as well as drawing in this season’s trend of crisp whites and lace, boho-chic maxi-dresses.

The rose is also having a moment. No mere floral trend, but a bold statement of femininity, expect colours from blood red to pale pink, with large, block prints on shiny or sheer dark fabrics. Check out Ted Baker’s new collection for inspiration.

High-waisted, wide-legged trousers are in (which comes as blessed relief to all those baulking at the other major spring/summer trend – short shorts!). Head to Levi’s for jeans that go as wide as they do high. Or maybe you prefer the more cosy trend of elevated sportswear? Zara has plenty of high end activewear you could as easily wear out to lunch as you would to the gym. Metallics are sticking around as well – if you’re not keen on the idea of walking out in gold lame top to tail, then try showing off this trend in your accessories. Think silver loafers, gold statement earrings and metallic eye shadows.

5. Treat yourself

Finally, don’t forget to take some time for yourself as well with some well-earned relaxing treats. Head to L’Occitane and Molton Brown for some truly luxurious candles, bubble bath and toiletries. If you’re in the market for a new fragrance, seek out Rituals for a unique perfume, or The Fragrance Shop for all the top brands at a fraction of the price.
